North Saskatchewan River with Historic North Battleford Skyline, 1969, by Fritz Stehwien, Greeting/Art Card
This was one of the first landscapes Fritz Stehwien painted after immigrating to Saskatchewan in 1968. The family initially settled in the prairie town of North Battleford, which is visible across the North Saskatchewan River in the image. The Battlefords area was home to a number of Indigenous nations for millennia, and was a site of resistance throughout European colonization, including the Riel Rebellion. In the late 1800s Battlefords was for a time the capital of what was then the North-West Territories, and became one of the first stops along the Canadian Northern Railway. With such deep history and a naturally stunning landscape, the area around North Battleford was an ideal vista for the newly immigrated artist to put on canvas.
Stehwien’s original painting is a large Oil on Canvas; the greeting card itself printed locally on high quality card stock. It measures 7.25″ x 5.25″, with the inside left blank for your own message to be written. The card and accompanying envelope are contained within a plastic slip for protection.
